We Tried Two Popular Hair Brands So You Don't Have To

Discover the hair growth products that actually work.
Losing hair is a pretty miserable experience — no one wants bald patches! Thankfully, hair loss doesn't have to last forever.
We thought all hair growth products were the same until our team started testing things out. Unfortunately, we found there are huge differences not only in price but in horrible side effects too!
We tried out the original, well-known products and compared them to some of the newer brands.
We tried: Rogaine, Vegamour, Nutrafol and others to discover what's really going to help your hair grow.
Here's what we found:
Rogaine
This is the product you've probably heard of. Formulated for women, Rogaine is available in both a 5% minoxidil unscented foam formula and a 2% topical formula in a dropper.
The brand states that you'll see positive results after four months of once or twice-daily use, depending on the product.
Unfortunately, some people state that they experienced an itchy, dry scalp and irritation after use. Some said their hair texture or color changed, they grew facial hair and even saw a temporary increase in hair loss. Those who opted for the foam version also experienced burning because of the alcohol used.
But the before and after pictures are convincing, and the company does have around 20 years' experience. Many dermatologists recommend Rogaine, but honestly, we were pretty horrified by one disclaimer: Minoxidil can lead to heart problems and complicate existing ones. Sheesh! In fact, minoxidil was initially known to treat high blood pressure.
Vegamour
We love a vegan, nontoxic option, so of course, Vegamour piqued our interest. Plus, the brand has clinical studies that show impressive results and a heap of positive customer reviews. You could see results after just four weeks and notice a positive difference after three months of use.
The bestselling topical GRO solution contains a blend of mung bean and red clover, which slows down the production of hair-damaging DHT. In addition, the curcumin in the formula helps prolong the hair's growth phase, and the Nicotiana benthamiana (a native Australian plant) in the blend also has impressive hair-growing qualities.
One staffer completely fell in love with the product stating that it smells "lovely with a light and fresh scent, not too strong." In just two months, she raved about the positive results! We love the natural approach (even though we were initially skeptical), and the impressive cited studies helped us understand the ingredients more.
And that's not all. People rave about the brand's eyelash and eyebrow growth products too. The toxic alternatives (like Latisse) can cause permanent damage and even eye discoloration.
hers
We couldn't believe it, but hers is literally just minoxidil! The ingredients used are the same harmful ones found in Rogaine. They're basically offering Latisse, but with a hers label, so we wonder how dangerous the products really are.
Their 2% 2 oz topical solution is nearly half the price of Rogaine. So, if you're happy to take the health risk, pick up your minoxidil from hers.
Nutrafol
Similar to Vegamour, Nutrafol is 100% natural. It offers a pill that contains 21 ingredients to help you achieve fuller, thicker hair and claims you'll see the difference in one to three months.
We were disappointed that the first ingredients listed were ashwagandha (the stress-reducing adaptogen) and collagen. Stress doesn't always cause hair loss, and the jury is still out how much benefit your hair can get when you take collagen.
One staffer said she loved how she felt after taking one easy pill a day. She also said she saw more hair after a month. Overall, we think Nutrafol is more of a wellness product than one that targets hair loss.
Overall Verdict
Undoubtedly, out of all the hair growth products we tried, Vegamour is our No. 1.
It's vegan, high quality and made without toxins. Plus, it's affordable — especially with a subscription. We worried we needed minoxidil, but we were astounded by the results. And we don't need to worry about scary side effects when we choose Vegamour.
The hemp version of the Vegamour solution has been formulated to reduce inflammation and help stimulate the hair follicles. The company also makes tasty vitamin-boosted gummies!
We suggest you skip the minoxidil altogether and try Vegamour instead. It's so much better for you, and it works.
